Romania is a country in transition as EU rulings, modernisation and Westernisation begin to change it forever. Some villages I visited were taking ownership of a car for the first time, replacing trains and horse and cart as the main form of transport. If you want to see it before it changes, go now!
I spent 3 weeks here, travelling by train, bus, bicycle, and when time was running out and the only alternative was a whole day on public transport as opposed to 2 hours in car, a car (driving a car was the scariest of them all). Getting around was challenging at times; I got lost on the Bucharest Metro for an hour and another time thought I was going to miss my flight home, but the hosts wherever I stayed were amongst the most friendly and helpful I’ve known.
