Wolf Alice Live at The Sugarmill, Stoke-on-Trent

Wolf Alice are one of the best live bands I've seen for a while - energetic, loud, quiet, an air of confidence in their songs and most importantly - good songs. Gig opener Moaning Lisa Smile was a belter - a surprising highlight early on as it wasn't one of my favourite songs when I heard the new EP. She immediately followed, along with some promising sounding songs they're yet to release - all stood up to the best of their material so far.

Wolf Alice

My 2 favourite Wolf Alice tunes came towards the end of the set - the controlled ferocity of Storms followed by a tender and almost heartbreaking Blush, which segued into a superb cover of Chris Isaak's Wicked Game.

It was refreshing to see a headline act who don't have an album yet play for longer than 1/2 an hour - I've seen plenty of bands who've already released a full-length play for less, even when they have the material to back it up.

The set was closed with the slightly madcap Fluffy and I'm already looking forward to seeing Wolf Alice again - if only their gig in London at the end of May wasn't sold out...

Superfood and Gengahr

Just a quick review for now - hopefully I'll add photos of the support bands soon.

Superfood, the main support, were good. Every instrument had catchy lines here and there, including some excellent vocal harmonies. I'll have to have another listen to the song they've also called Superfood - it hasn't grabbed me before, but tonight it was probably the highlight of their set. They remind me of someone but I can't quite place them, it was almost like 90s band Straw were back when I first heard them:

Straw - Weird Superman

Unfortunately I only caught 15 minutes of Gengahr, but I really enjoyed one of their tunes and another was good too. I did feel they might sound a bit samey, but enjoying 2 out of 3 songs isn't a bad hit rate!
